トランプ政権下で初めてとなる「国防戦略」を取りまとめ、１９日、公表した。
この中では、中国やロシアとの軍事的な競合への対応を最優先の課題とし、
アメリカの優位を維持するため核を含む軍事力の増強を急ぐとともに、
同盟関係を強化するとして、日本などの同盟国の役割を重視する姿勢を強調している。
マティス長官は、今回の戦略について、「いまやテロではなく、大国間の競争こそが最も重要な焦点だ」と述べ、
中国やロシアとの軍事的な競合への対応に最優先で取り組む方針を鮮明にした。
公表された戦略では、中国について、「経済力を使って周辺国を脅し、
軍事力もてこにインド太平洋の秩序を自国に優位な形でつくりかえようとしている」と強く非難し、
ロシアに対しても、「ヨーロッパと中東の経済・安全保障の構図を都合よく変えようとしている」として、
両国を既存の国際秩序への脅威となる「修正主義勢力」だと位置づけている。
日本については「自衛隊は非常に有能で、
アメリカ軍とのパートナーシップは非常によいものになるだろう」として、
日米同盟はさらに深化していくという見方を示した。
素晴らしい。苦言を言うならば一つだけ、対中国に対する貿易赤字を解消してください。
